What is the difference between CPR and AED Training?

In cardiac arrest, the heart stops the action of pumping blood. This is generally caused by ventricular fibrillation, which reasons the heart to quiver. In such condition, CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) can provide a small amount of blood to the heart, which keeps brain and body function going until defibrillation can take place. In simple words, CPR is an emergency procedure that is used when someone’s heart stops beating or the person stops breathing.

On the other hand, AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is an electronic defibrillation device used to treat the cardiac arrest. This device needs hands-on training to use it properly in emergencies. CPR training includes teaching two basic actions that are chest compressions and rescue breathing (mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-mask resuscitation). In AED training, a person gets thorough knowledge of how to use AED device that facilitates blood circulation in a regular rhythm when someone is suffering from cardiac arrest.

CPR is an initial step to treat a person with cardiac arrest to buy some more time, whereas AED is a further step that can save a victim’s life. CPR training teaches a process that is useful to save some time until AED kit arrives. It also makes the heart to more likely to respond defibrillation.

CPR gives some circulation of oxygen through the blood to the heart and brain. This delays both, death of heart muscle and the brain death. This provides some time to get the AED kit and treat a victim. An AED unit delivers electric current through the heart muscle, which results in temporarily ceasing all electrical activity in the heart, with a hope that when electrical impulse returns, instead of VF, it will return in normal pumping action.

CPR training offers to learn a lifesaving technique which proves extremely useful in many emergencies, in which someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped. Training of AED proves beneficial for a victim suffering from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) until the further medical assistance is made available.
